WE HAVE A WINNER
Another month has come and gone, which means we have another Hound Pound T-shirt winner! Congratulations Brent Maier - you're the September winner. As you know the HP T-shirts are handmade with lots of love, so it will take a couple weeks before you can bust out a wod in your new shirt. Also, for those who don't know Brent, he competed this weekend in the CrossFit/USA Weightlifting Open and had some houndstanding lifts and a hound of a showing. Congratulations Brent!

The contest continues...become a Hound Pound member in October and you could be wodding in a new shirt in November. Become a follower today!

OUTDOOR CLASS
Monday is the last official outdoor class of the year and the weather should be good. As usual the wod will be at Sandy Beach at 6:00PM. I'll even give you a hint as to what the wod will be..."Take the baby with you"...Sign up now!

JEFFF'S EATS
New yummy creation. Roasted brussel
sprouts with caramelized onions, garlic,
and bacon. So good!

               Freezer full of goodness!

It's been another busy day of cooking and we've make lots of healthy and tasty meals - chicken veggie soup, roast beef, roasted chicken, chicken sausages, spaghetti squash with bison sauce, apple cinnamon muffins, blueberry muffins, cauliflower rice, and our new favourite, roasted brussel sprouts. Should be a good week of eating! Actually, should be a good winter of eating - we've stocked the freezer full of chicken, bison and completely grass fed roasts and steaks. We'll be well fed this winter, and this will cut down on the weekly trips to the market!

READ YOUR LABELS!!
I'm going to start a new section for the blog - things that are bad for you. We'll review ingredients commonly listed on food labels that are not good for you and anything else that you should just stay away from. In a perfect paleo world we wouldn't eat anything with a label and we'd made everything from scratch, but sometimes this is just not possible. Today's 'bad' is NITRATE. Nitrates are found in many foods, especially cured meats such as bacon and sausages. Nitrates are used to preserve color and maintain microbial safety. Nitrate is harmless, but it can convert to nitrite, which can form nitrosamines, a powerful cancer-causing chemical, in your body. Yikes! Whenever possible, look for nitrate-free preserved meats. For all you local hounds, Sunworks Farm and The Old Country Sausage Shop at The Calgary Farmers' Market both carry nitrate free sausages and bacon.
